The Cowboy and the Bag Lady went for their customary stroll in the pasture yesterday. It is dry, for the most part, with only a few patches of leftover icy snow.

There are also a few muddy spots, as you might be able to tell from this photo:

Or this one:

(By the way, this is what a cranky bull looks like when he wants to fight, so if you ever see one with his head down, looking at you sideways, be prepared to run! In this instance, the Cowboy was NOT the target - our second bull was standing just out of camera range, and the two of them had been going at it earlier!)

The Bag Lady wanted to take a nice close-up shot of this little heifer, but the heifer was more interested in the Bag Lady's hand than in posing for her portrait!

Everybody needs a good scratch once in awhile:

And, last, but by no means least, there's always a "black sheep" in the family!!

Hope you enjoyed our little "tour" of the pasture!

I miss cows.
"Go placidly amidst the hay and grass and remember what peace there may be in milking..."

Seriously. I always liked them. I also miss rural life and being outside in the open without having to deal with humans and traffic, etc.
Thanks for the tour.

You're welcome!
I would definitely miss rural life, too, if I had to move back to the city. I love the peace and quiet, and not having to deal with traffic, etc.
(And, as you may have guessed, I love the cows, too!)

I love that one scratching itself on the tree! Those are great photos.

That tree looks like it's scratched a lot of cattle. :) Great pics.. but where's our Milkshake?

And Leah, I recognize that quote.. it must be from Desidecowta.. ;)

Thanks, Sarah and Hilary!
Yes, that tree has seen a lot of cattle.
Milkshake's mother, the White Bitch, refused to allow Milkshake to pose for any photographs because the photographer wasn't offering enough money!
Seriously, just as I was about to snap a shot of her, her mother walked in front of her and started herding her away.
Next time, I promise.

That is one scary looking face on that bull...*shudder*
So - Milkshake is a little celebrity, huh? :-)

Missicat - I wouldn't want that bull mad at me, I can tell ya!
And yes, Milkshake is a celebrity because she is still the only calf out there!! Don't know what's going on with Spooky....

Great pics Sis. I find it ironic that you (who always kept her nails short) can now grow your nails, but have lost curl. I have gained curl and can't grow my nails anymore!

the Bag Lady said...

Funny you should mention that, Reb. I was thinking the other day that my nails are getting far too long. Need to cut them before gardening season!

I was totally going to comment on how can you possibly keep your nails long on a ranch? I need some pointers.

SB - I wear gloves when I do any outside work. Always. Rodeo Queen leather gloves. (size XS, by the way.)
And I honestly do not TRY to grow them long, the damned things just do that all by themselves!!
I have actually had pretty good luck with them lately - ordinarily, no matter how careful I am, I am constantly snapping them off.

I'm with Leah. I miss cows too and really enjoyed the pics. My grandfather had a dairy farm for 30-some years before switching to beef and I loved spending weeks at a time there.

When I moved to where I am now, two things convinced me it was the house for me: 1- It faced a creek that offered good fishing and 2- The creek meandered through a meadow/pasture across the road and a herd of cows grazed there daily.

So I could wake up every morning and gaze at cows while daydreaming about the trout I'd catch later.

PS- The cows are gone now and the pasture has returned to field but I still fish in the creek.

Frank - glad you enjoyed the pictures! Sorry to hear you no longer have cows to gaze at while they graze, but at least you can still indulge your fishing fetish....
