Black Days

Why is it that "new and improved" so seldom is? Improved, that is.

The Bag Lady uses the Picasa program to save her pictures and video clips, and they recently came out with the newest version. The Bag Lady thought she would download this newer version because it was supposed to be better. New tools for editing pictures, even a program to make movies!!

She is not impressed and wishes now that she hadn't changed. You would think that at her advanced age, she would know better. She has had this kind of thing happen to her several times in the past, but must be a slow learner.

She would switch back, except she's afraid she will lose all the photos and video clips that she took whilst using the new program. What is so wrong with the new program, you ask? Well, for one thing, she can't see her video clips in the thumbnail mode. All of them appear black. In the older version of the program, she could see the first frame of the clip, which helped identify which clip was which. With the "improved" program, all she sees are little blacked out frames. In order to find a particular video, she has to watch them all, then mark down which number is assigned to the video clip she wants. It is so FREAKIN' annoying! What f**king genius came up with this?

And the new editing tools? Useless. If you want to 'smudge' or blur part of a photo, you are supposed to click on it. When you do, the program picks another portion of the picture to insert there!! Suddenly, you'll have someone's foot on top of their face!

The Bag Lady is not impressed.

New and improved? Not in the Bag Lady's books.

That sounds more than annoying. "New and improved" is rarely as good as original and adequate.

dfLeah - I much preferred original and adequate. Wish I could go back....

Fury! I suspect a conspiracy theory. They're trying to break us! New fangled indeed. Plain old Fangled would be more like it.

Carla - I think that's half my problem - I'm such a dinosaur when it comes to computers.....~~sigh~~

TA - give me old-fangled anytime! It has been so frustrating, I wish I had just stuck with the old tried and true!

Aw, that's no good. "New and improved" is always a reason to be concerned. It's rarely any better.

Maybe they'll fix it when they realize that its a messy kind of new and improved?

Can you do an online search and see if anyone else is having the same problem (and how they handled it)?

Can you post the foot-instead-of-the-face pic? Need a laugh over here! :-)
Is that like our new and improved economy? *sigh*

Sagan - one of these days I'll learn not to fall for the "new and improved" crap!

Tricia - I did go to their site and try to find a similar problem, but couldn't. I'm so computer-illiterate.

Missicat - the economy seems to be getting everyone down, doesn't it? I have been trying to ignore it. **sticks head back in sand**

I tend to wait and see if I hear screams of annoyance in the distance from other s who have switched over to new and improved before I do so...I have learned the hard way with a few things.
It's sort of like when Microsoft redid XP to Vista...arbitrary silly changes making it harder to use...often with useful bits gone or hidden.
Very annoying...especially when wha tyou have will do what you need already.
Is ther any way you can save what you have to a CD or DVD and then reinstall the old one?? I could see it not reading anything you'd edited or done int he new program.
I suspect you could still view images on the video bits...there's probably just some dumb setting in a tiny menu somewhere you have to click on or something.
Hope it works out...nothing more annoying than yelling at a computer screen.

Geo - I should have waited on this, but didn't. If I back up the gazillion photos I have in the program, then un-install the program, maybe I could get it back to what it was? (I know nothing about this stuff....sheesh.)

Go and buy some flash (thumb) drives and download all of your photos and clips, new & old, then take out the new version. It is a good idea to have all your pics & such backed up anyway, so now is a good time to do it. Check Staples and Best Buy, they have had three packs of drives on sale before, you don't need really expensive ones, but get at least 2GB per drive.

Yikes! Wish I could help you with this. I was confused on the old one. lol

Reb - um, okay. Best Buy hasn't opened here yet, but soon, I think.

Maggie - I was confused on the old one, too, so I guess I should've stuck with it!

Just do a Google search for "Picasa (version number) troubleshooting blank thumbnails" - without the quotes. That ought to take you to discussions about what to do. You might just need a patch of some sort.

Thanks, Hilary - I'll try that!
