Dawn, who blogs over at The Flightless Writer, and has written the terrific book, Ripples on the Lake, had requested a calf named after herself, and a calf named after the main character in her book, Saffron Delaney. The Bag Lady knew that this cow was the last chance for a light-coloured calf, so had already determined that this calf would be Saffron.
Imagine the Bag Lady's surprise when she went down this morning and discovered that the cow had given birth to another calf overnight! So it is almost as though it were ordained that these were the calves to be named for Dawn and Saffron (they are both heifers, too!)
Here are DAWN and SAFFRON:

(Do not try this at home - professional stunt dog demonstrating!)
And the Bag Lady should perhaps have taken this sign in the sky as a warning!! Seriously, next time there is a big X in the sky, the Bag Lady is going to take cover.
Welcome to Dawn and Saffron. I think Saffron's name really suits her.
I thought so, too - especially as she seems a feisty little thing! And the colouring is right, too!
Hence the saying, "then came the Dawn"...
I'm just mad about Saffron...
Hilary - exactly!!
Aren't they ever so cute!?
I'm loving all your pictures of calves because raising calves is a real passion of mine. I wanted to do an SBI website on calf rearing but not enough people want to know about it! (All my interests seem to be unfashionable!)
It is so exciting to have calves named after Saffron and me. I printed out the picture to put on my wall. I will expect regular updates on how Dawn and Saffron are doing and hope they don't both become beef stew!
Hi, Dawn: Glad you are enjoying the calves. I'm so glad you printed the picture of them - I'll try to post another, better one for you.
You'll be delighted to know that their mother seems willing to take on both of them (I know you are aware of what can happen sometimes with twins, especially when their mother is a first-timer!), and that both calves appear to be doing well.
In all likelihood, unless something unforeseen happens, they will both live long and productive lives, rather than becoming stew...hopefully.
Loved the professional stunt dog demo. Would prefer to not have to see anything similar in future.
Good names, Saffron is a pretty colour. We need a better picture of Dawn, or is she just shy?
Love your incident photos, please don't do that again!
dfLeah - the Bag Lady would prefer not to do that again, either.
Reb - to be perfectly honest, the Bag Lady didn't even SEE Dawn when she took that picture! It was only after she snapped it that she realized that little calf was lying there. Didn't know the cow had had twins!
(I was standing quite a bit further away than it looks in the photo - had to crop a lot of it off.)
and all your work makes me tired just reading about it.
studiously avoiding the cow patties with my nikes,
Love the calves, and your stunt dog demo was hilarious.
Hope your head is feeling better! Seeing the re-enactment gave me even more sympathy. Owww!
I hope you're recovering from your "incident"!
I was so sick to read about the philly in the derby. They are such amazing creatures.
Miz - the Bag Lady hopes you come back to check out her next post, after your comment about Nikes!
Crabby - glad you enjoyed the stunt dog... it doesn't look like a really bad fall, but somehow, the older I get, the harder I fall!
SB - I was more upset over the horse than I was the fall!
And twins are only good when the mother will take both of them, and they are both healthy, yada, yada. So far, these are both alive, but they are so small, and one of them is not doing well now.
Oh Bag Lady! Quite the weekend! Hope you are feeling ok after your tumble. Sounds like something I would do, being the very picture of grace that I am not...
Javachick - you, too? I could give lessons in how not to be graceful...
Feeling much better now, thanks, the stiffness in my neck is almost all gone.
df Bag lady,
I love the picture demo but let's not have a repeat.
Dawn and Saffron are adorable.
dfTerrie - a moment's inattention! The worst part is that I built the damned deck in the first place, and knew I should do something about that spot. It will be fixed!
