Back to Work for a Rest!

The Rancher and the Bag Lady were seriously tired last night.

They had a neighbour make some square bales for them because square bales are easier to handle if they need to keep a cow in the barn or corral for any length of time. They ended up with 450 square bales!

The Rancher brought the first load home, and the Bag Lady helped him unload them and stack them in the barn. (She didn't think to take a picture until the trailer was almost empty):

Then the Bag Lady went back to the field with the Rancher and helped him (as best she could, with her bad back) with the second load.

When they finished with the second load, they made a nice supper, completely from home-grown veggies and meat! (Hamburgers cooked on the barbeque, baby potatoes, new peas, and fried zucchini):

And then the Bag Lady collapsed into her bed, because she has to go to work today! (These darned long weekends really take a toll on her..... )

OMG! I vividly remember the one time I helped a friend pitching bales - it was not easy to do and that was when I was young and foolish and in much better condition than I am now!

Then you had to make me jealous over your supper - we had smokies over the fire in hot dog buns!

I'm trying to imagine pitching bales with a bad back....trying and failing.

Reb - I wish I was in better shape. As it is, I'm just old and foolish!

Carla - definitely the same, but different!

Mary Anne in Kentucky - I am paying for it today! And there are still two more loads in the field!

Anonymous - Mom? Is that you?

Funny how weekends can wear you out like that! I actually took it easy for a change (aside from cleaning the house and stacking firewood in the garage).

Enjoy your restful work day!

My husband has memories of pitching hay in the August heat from 6am to 6pm for weeks on end when he was a teen. Hard, backbreaking work.

You and your husband are to be admired for all the hard work you put in.

Beautiful dinner, much deserved.

Square bales bring back such memories. I always loved to climb up on the stacks.

I hate getting older. How do we do all the stuff we have to do? We can't even afford to hire anyone to do the stuff we have to do cuz we have to spend all our money on medication and booze just so we don't feel our suffering as we age.

Damn that food looks good! Too bad I could only eat a tiny bit. Maybe one or two bites of burger and a half of a zucchini.

Hay!

Baggie, Baggie, Baggie. Your back isn't going to take kindly to you overworking it. At least you're taking good care of your taste buds and belly.

Speaking of hay, guess what I saw on the way home. A field of square bales, with one man driving the tractor with the wagon, one man stacking bales on it, and the third one was riding a four-wheeler, leaning off sideways, grabbing the bale by the twine, and pitching it as he sat upright.

Somehow, I think that circus trick would have been even worse for your back!

JavaChick - you call cleaning the house and stacking firewood taking it easy?? You'd fit right in around here! :)

messymimi - the Rancher talks about stacking incredible numbers of square bales when he was young and tough. But he's just as happy to make round bales and use the tractor nowadays!

dfLeah - I, too, used to love square bales. Ahem.

Janell - LOL! All that money for medication and booze could be better spent on hiring some young'uns to do the hard work.... if we could drag them away from their iPods and such.

Hilary - you are right, of course. My back has been complaining all day about the way I treated it!

Mary Anne in Kentucky - my back went into spasms just reading about that!

I haven't had fried zuchinni in ages....yum.

I see your weekend "off" was a busy one. Glad you got some relaxing in at the end of it all!

More news of hay--today the field where the alfalfa was cut shortly before you cut yours had been cut for the second time.

Oh man, what a bummer...at least you probably slept like a log, right? Or like a bale of hay?

I love fried zucchini and your whole dinner looks delish.
