Getting Ready

Winter is coming. The Rancher and the Bag Lady have been getting ready. The Rancher came home with this.....(which is half of the stock trailer, so that pile is about 10 feet long.)

With him splitting and the Bag Lady stacking, they spent a busy afternoon and turned it into this......

(which is two rows deep, although it's a little difficult to tell from the picture)
That pile is now a little bigger, because they weren't quite finished when the Bag Lady took the photo, so she spent a morning splitting and piling the remainder by herself because the Rancher was busy elsewhere.

This will definitely help keep them warm for at least part of the winter!

It looks like you're well supplied for the winter.

And what a lot of hard work.

You were definitely busy! Splitting wood works a lot of body parts. Will you have sore muscles? You probably won't because you're already in shape!

Leah - that pile will probably last part of the winter, anyway!

Redbush - yes, I have sore muscles! But it's worth it.

I think these pix tell me more about Canadian winters than photographs of snow ever could. And to think you probably don't even do any real heating with wood!

We need to get busy -- our wood pile is pitiful! We might be getting snow tomorrow morning...

The work of a farmer/rancher is never done, is it?

Great job, both of you!

I am jealous. If I'm judging the length right, you now have about three times as much as I do. I knew I needed to get more, and now my mouth's watering!

Bunnygirl - oh, yes, definitely helps give you an idea of our winters! But we actually do heat quite a lot with wood - when the wood stove is going, we only use the furnace for back-up! :)

Spokalulu - a few days ago, they were forecasting snow here tomorrow, but they've changed it now. It's just going to be colder, apparently.

messymimi - it is starting to feel like we might be caught up now.... maybe.

Mary Anne - I didn't mean to make you jealous! It is nice to know that wood pile is there, though!

Okay, you must be professional wood-pilers. No way I could get that much done in an afternoon. Of course, I have to carefully inspect each piece of wood for spiders before I will pick it up and I spend the entire time ready to flee at the sight of one (sad, but true). I cannot control the panic. And me a country girl.

We have 2 cord of firewood sitting in our driveway that has been there for a month. Husband told me - safe from his hotel room in Japan - that I should get that piled in the garage ASAP, before it snows. Basically, he's just hoping I'll do it all before he comes home. He can dream on.

JavaChick - your comment made me laugh. I, too, have a spider phobia and used to waste a lot of time smacking each piece of wood on the ground to knock off any potential spiders! But when the Rancher is splitting wood, he rarely takes a break, so I have to put my mind in neutral and try to forget about any bugs or creepy-crawlies.
I keep telling myself what good exercise it all is.

Looks good sis. That kind of work needs to be spread out though, especially at your age ;) I kid, really, I do.

Thanks, sis (and you're probably right.... the stiff muscles are finally easing up a little!)

Holy cow! That's a HUGE woodpile! Let the snow fly...you'll be snug as a bug in a rug.

Cheryl, bite your tongue! I'd rather not have snow for a couple more weeks (months?).... :)

Tongue has been bitten...:-)

I went away for a work trip this weekend and returned to find winter here, too!

Oh. My. Gosh! I can't even imagine splitting that much wood. You're good. Can you lift your arms today??!

Thanks, Cheryl!! :)

Miz - we still have no snow, and the temperature is reasonable, but the wind was cold today!

Joanna - it's definitely a good workout!

Wow...and I was teasing my Dad about him having too much wood for winter :)
He built himself a hydraulic wood splitter a few years ago that he can haul behind his quad and is now quite the woodcutting machine when he wants to be...

Geo - I would love to have a hydraulic wood-splitter... perhaps someday.
