More Kitchen Stories

So. The Bag Lady made her stewed tomatoes the other day - here's a picture of all the yummy ingredients in the pan. Aren't the colours pretty?

She has been digging the last of the carrots, and wanted to share this carroty hug with you!

There have been some really strange-looking carrots coming out of the ground! Because of all the rain earlier in the season, she didn't get around to thinning the carrots as she should have, which has resulted in some closeness, obviously. And some of the carrots have grown strange-looking side shoots, probably due to the hard ground. But regardless of how funny they look, they taste wonderful. She just wonders what she's going to do with all of them. She has, so far, filled two 5-gallon pails, and still has half a row in the ground. Carrot soup, carrot cake, carrot souffle? She gave a huge bagful to her mother-in-law to share with her friends, but still has more than she really needs. Maybe next year she'll remember not to plant quite so many!

At least remember to thin them, even if they do make art! Frozen grated carrots, to add to things on the spur of the moment? Carrot souffle?

It's a good thing I'd finished breakfast when I saw that picture of the tomato sauce. Mmmmm.

Those carrots look like they wanted a few more private moments in the ground.
Have you pickled any carrots?
There's always carrot juice.
I like them raw as snacks myself though they may not keep.
Look up Carrot Halvah. It's a nice dessert.
Those stewed tomatoes look wonderful.

Chop and freeze some, and saute later in butter and ginger. Even Sweetie eats carrots that way.

It looks like the one is trying to save the other from drowning what with all the rain you had. (that's my pg version) You could make a trip south :)

That's a really cute carrot hug, Bag Lady. You can make carrot fries with them...honestly, I just read a recipe about making carrot fries and sweet potato fries in the oven. If I can find the link I'll send it to you.

Mary Anne - if I had been able to walk in the garden, I would have thinned them... but by the time it hardened up, I couldn't get the little ones out of the ground! (Good ol' gumbo!)

Leah - you could be right! I shall search for Carrot Halvah.

messymimi - sounds yummy! Thanks for the tip.

Reb - I like your pg version!

Cheryl - I love sweet potato fries, but never would have thought to make carrot fries!
Cool.

Abby cuz - good plan. I will try pickling some with the dill I dehydrated last year to see how it works, but there are still far more than we will ever use!

I just pulled all my carrots on Sunday; don't have as many as you do but plenty for the two of us (considering that I don't like carrots except raw). So far I've been putting them in salads and I diced some up to throw in tomato sauce that is cooking in the slow cooker today.

Love the carrot hug. :)

I know what you mean with the too many carrots. I thought our rectangular bin full (approximately 18x24 inches) was a lot. We had some strange artwork with ours, too. I had some purple and some white ones as well. Go figure! What yummy looking stewed tomatoes!

Love the carrot hug, what a great picture!

Though it made me feel sorry for all the poor carrots that give their lives for the carrot juice I put in my smoothie each morning.

Redbush - I, too, had a purple one and a couple of gold ones!

Crabby - perhaps I shouldn't have posted that picture - what happens below-ground should stay below-ground....

That's one odd looking carrot.

How about pickled carrots? My grandma used to make them and they are SO good...cuz, you know, I'm sure you just haven't had enough of canning yet :)

Geo - I did make some pickled carrots.... but could certainly make more. I will have to experiment with using last year's dehydrated dill, though, because much of mine didn't grow this year.
