messymimi - it is either a Ruffed Grouse or a Spruce Grouse - those are the two most common in our area. I think this one is a Ruffed Grouse.
Mary Anne in Kentucky - We see them quite often in the fall, mostly by accident. Of course, it's a different story if you actually go looking for them!
Leah - this guy startled me by practically walking up to me in the garden. I went to the house for the camera and by the time I got back, I had to really search to find him in the bushes.
Major danger when riding horseback through the woods - they wait until you are right on top of them and then fly up scaring the bejesus out of you and, of course, the horse!
Yum Yucky - sorry, but your comment made me laugh out loud. Did you Google? They are wild animals. Live in the bushes. Very independent. No coops for these guys! (Although they are occasionally found hunkered down in a stack of hay bales.)

Better than a "Where's Waldo"!
What species is that?
Have never seen one in real life.

Cool. Thank you. Love the pose in the fall foliage.

Thanks, Hilary!
Lovely photo sis.
Thanks, sis!
Prairie Chickens. Are they the independent kind that don't live in a coop or on a farm? Now I must Google. You totally are gonna make me Google.
