Surprise!!

Some of you may remember back in March when the Bag Lady asked you to choose which cow was going to calve first - the White Bitch or Spooky. And you may remember that the White Bitch was first.

Well, have you been wondering what happened with Spooky? The Bag Lady watched her with some concern, because she had been showing signs of imminent birth, but then they stopped. The Bag Lady thought that perhaps Spooky had miscarried, and she just didn't find the stillborn calf.

Well, apparently the Bag Lady was wrong. Spooky must have just been empathizing with the White Bitch. And she did not lose her calf. In fact, she had it on Monday!

Presenting Frank!

Named for Gena's grandfather. Gena has a couple of entertaining blogs, Gena Cooks,
and Still in the Works.

Isn't he a cutie?!
There is still one more cow who hasn't calved, but we aren't sure she's going to. She's even older than Spooky, and may not have gotten romantically involved with the bull.....

So this may be the last calf of the season. Or not.
(Makes the Bag Lady look like a really competent rancher, doesn't it?)

Frank looks remarkably self-possessed for a newborn.

Mizfit - some cows earn their names!!

dfLeah - he is quite the calf, alright!

He's lovely! I'm jealous. I have two whole bales of hay at the new (unfinished) house, and nothing to feed it to. Canada is a bit far to ship it UPS.

Mary Anne - you'll just have to adopt a critter somewhere so you can feed him your bales! UPS would be pretty expensive, alright!! (especially for those big round bales - they weight a ton....almost!)

Sagan - it's always a pleasant surprise to wake up in the morning and find a new calf!
(Actually we had a pretty good idea she was going to produce him...at least this time the signs were unmistakable!)

Frank is cute! I usually never use the word "cute" to describe cows, but Frank is definitely just that! :)

Congratulations!

Thanks, Susan! I know what you mean about 'cute' - not the first word that comes to mind when you think of cows, but calves - yes!

dfTerrie - and I'm sure he will in a few days, if it ever cools down enough for them to want to do anything more than lie in a shady spot!!
Hit 30C (or higher) again today. And it's bringing in another thunderstorm (had a doozie last night that I captured on video and will post tomorrow...)

With a name like that, I envision a future full of field after field of contented cows.

And one deliriously happy Frankie. ;)
