Friday Ranch Round-up

The Bag Lady told you the other day, didn't she, that she was planning on doing some crafts in order to have something to put on her table at the craft sale the first part of November? Well, you know what they say about the best laid plans of mice and (wo)men....

In actuality, she has had to postpone those plans for a few days. The Rancher needed her help over at their summer pasture, where he has been trying to fix the mess the loggers left. Yesterday, he was finally at the seeding stage. This is a tiny portion of what needs to be seeded:

Here is the Rancher with his new seeder hooked onto his old tractor. The tractor originally belonged to his father, and is probably close to qualifying as an antique, but it still runs like a top!

The ground is still rather rough for that little seeder, so the Rancher devised a float for the Bag Lady to drag behind the other tractor to help smooth out some of the rough spots. Here is a little video clip of the Rancher preparing a "float":

Step one: cut down a tree.....

Unfortunately, the Bag Lady was so busy helping him after step one that she didn't have time to take any more photos. They chained some big logs together, hooked the logs behind the tractor, and the Bag Lady drove around and around and around the field, dragging the logs behind the tractor.

The Bag Lady will be doing this again today. The Rancher had to go to work today, so the Bag Lady will be alone, dragging logs around. She has to remember not to turn too sharply so she doesn't catch the chain between the dual wheels on the tractor and flip the logs up into the cab of the tractor.......that might hurt.

Have a good weekend!

Yard Guard

Here is a little video for your amusement.

(Trust the Bag Lady when she says the squirrel was in more danger from the cat seen at the end of the video than he ever was from the dog!!)

Garden Produce

The Bag Lady dug her potatoes, onions and carrots yesterday.

She didn't plant as many as she has in the past, but this year they made up in size what they lacked in volume! (This is her size 7 gardening shoe....)

Some of the carrots are awfully large, too. Unfortunately, it was difficult to get an accurate photo.

She also did a little preparation for some crafts she has in mind. She has a table booked for an upcoming craft sale at the beginning of November, and needs to make some items to go along with her CartSmart Bags.
She may have to ease up on her blogging a little over the next couple of weeks in order to produce enough crafts to make having a table worthwhile.

Waste Not, Want Not

(warning: Preachy Post!)

Crabby over at Cranky Fitness wrote a post yesterday about staying fit in these hard economic times. Some of you have probably figured out by now that the Bag Lady isn't exactly a fitness guru (hehehehe), but she does try to live a simple, economical life, so she has decided to share a few tips she has learned for stretching your dollar.

The first thing you have to ask yourself is do you really NEED that Ipod/new outfit/couch/DVD/whatever, or do you simply WANT it? Is shopping a form of recreation for you, or do you shop for specific items and ignore all the "deals" on display? In the past few years of rampant consumerism, the Bag Lady has been astounded at the sight of people lined up for hours, waiting for a store to open in order to buy the newest computer game/electronic gadget/whatever. She wonders if, due to this new economic reality, those will be the same people lined up waiting for the soup kitchens to open?

Oh, wait, she was going to give you some tips for pinching pennies. Sorry, she got sidetracked!

Most of her tips involve food, because that is an area she knows well. Some of you who have been reading her blog for awhile are probably aware that she likes food. She likes to cook and create new dishes, and she loves to eat! Which is really obvious to anyone who has seen her picture!

Meal planning is an important part of staying within your budget. With a little planning, you can create simple, nutritious meals for far less money than you would spend on one meal out in a fancy restaurant. For example, buy a less expensive cut of meat with a bone in it. Roast it for supper on Sunday, then boil the bone and any leftover meat and vegetables for soup for later in the week.

As some of you are aware, the Bag Lady cooked a big meal this past Thanksgiving weekend for a large family gathering. From the leftover turkey, she will make hot turkey sandwiches, cold turkey sandwiches, turkey pot pie, a few TV dinners, and she has boiled the carcass for soup. She also has leftover ham, which will be used for omelettes and sandwiches, and that bone has also been boiled for soup.
The TV dinners and the soups will go into the deep freeze for later. So from that one big dinner, she will have enough leftovers for roughly 10 meals. Nothing will go to waste, if she can help it. Her dog will eat fairly well, too!

Don't eat meat? Try making vegetable soup. Use those leafy bits off the celery, some potatoes and the less-than-pretty parts of the carrots and onions, throw in some dried beans or lentils, herbs and spices (don't forget the bay leaf, and don't forget to remove it before you serve the soup!) and let it cook.

Think you don't have time to make soup? If you have time to do laundry and clean your house, you have time to make soup. Ten minutes of cutting up the ingredients, leaving it to simmer on the back of the stove while you go about your other tasks, giving it a stir occasionally when you walk past. If you divide it into serving sizes, put it into glass jars, let it cool and then freeze it, you'll have a ready supply of easy meals. (You ask why glass jars? They can be washed and re-used over and over, and don't release the toxins that plastic sometimes does!)

Do you use a lot of paper towel in your kitchen (something the Bag Lady is guilty of)? Try hanging a hand towel over the handle of your oven door and using it to dry your hands. It can be washed and re-used countless times.

Don't waste money buying bottled water. The tap water in most cities is probably better for you. Buy a refillable bottle and fill it at home. You'd be surprised at the money you'll save.

The Bag Lady is afraid that there are going to be hard economic times ahead for many people, and they are going to have to relearn some of the tricks that their grandparents knew. In the last couple of decades of prosperity, the Bag Lady thinks we have become a throw-away society. The movement toward recycling is, in reality, a step back to our grandparents time when they knew how to be self-sufficient and to get by with less. Nothing was wasted on the farm because there wasn't any money to buy new. They turned frayed collars, replaced sleeve cuffs, patched and altered their clothing. Table scraps fed the dogs, chickens or pigs. You made do, or did without. This is a lesson that may have to be re-learned in the coming days.

What's your favourite tip for saving money?

A Whole Year of Blathering!

Wow. The Bag Lady is celebrating her one-year blogiversary. Hard to believe how quickly the past year has flown by.

When she started on this journey, she wasn't sure she would have anything to say of much interest to anyone else, and is deeply grateful to the people who have been so supportive and faithful about reading and commenting on a regular basis! She has 'met' so many terrific people through blogging, and has even learned a few things! An amazing feat, as it's not easy to teach an old Bag new tricks!

So thank you all, for being supportive, and for reading the Bag Lady's rambling, babbling blather.

Thanksgiving Report

Well.

The Bag Lady's Thanksgiving dinner went very well.

She managed to take a few photos during the preparations, but when it came time for the carving and final preparation, the camera was forgotten. Can you believe she forgot to take a picture of the turkey!? But she will share a few of the photos that she did manage to take:

Making the cranberry sauce early in the morning:

The turkey is in the(table-top) roaster:

Grandma's home-made buns:

Apple pie (there was home-made pumpkin pie, too, that one of the grandma's brought, but the Bag Lady didn't get a picture of it!):

The Bag Lady decided that one apple pie wasn't enough, so she made up a dessert. She called it Lemon Surprise recipe is in the comment section (it turned out so well that her brother-in-law ate the last piece straight out of the dish, claiming it would save on cleaning another plate! The Bag Lady could almost have put the dish straight back into the cupboard, he did such a good job of cleaning it up!):

Surprise Spread Appetizer (can you tell the dish is shaped like a turkey?):

Here's what's left of the ham after the meal:

Odd-ball potato from the Bag Lady's garden:

Relaxing after the meal - playing a game called "Sequence":

There were 18 people for dinner, and everyone seemed quite happy with the meal. The Bag Lady loves big family gatherings!

The Bag Lady's niece brought gin and tonic to drink, and graciously shared with the Bag Lady. This morning, the Bag Lady is happy to report that she is probably safe from malaria for many, many years to come! (Luckily, though, she doesn't have a headache!) Thanks, Linds! It was delicious!

Now she has to finish cleaning up her kitchen, and later in the day she and the Rancher are going to the home of some friends of theirs to do this all over again!! Yum.

Very Brief Friday Round-up

The Bag Lady has nothing much for you today. She took some pictures last night of a partridge who was hanging around in the feed stacks, but they didn't turn out. ~~sigh~~ She was too far away and it was almost dark, so when she zoomed in to try to get a better shot, the pictures went terribly wrong.

Here is a little video clip she tried to take, but she ended up doing the same thing - tried to zoom in and it didn't work very well! Meh. Nobody's perfect!

She doesn't have much else going on right now, but she feels like she's really busy. How is that possible? Oh, right, she's cooking a big dinner tomorrow and has a multitude of things to do in order to get ready!!

Hope you all have a great weekend!
