This is what the Bag Lady used to use to feed cows. She now uses the Rancher's new tractor, so her trusty old loader sits abandoned and snow-covered. This is how much snow fell in the recent storm in the Bag Lady's region.
(Just visible in the bottom of the photo is the bucket for the new tractor. It has a fancy easy-on gadget that makes switching from the bale fork to the bucket a cinch. The Bag Lady is now also able to plow snow off her driveway! The bale fork on the loader in the picture weighed about a ton and was tightly bolted onto the bucket, making it impossible for the Bag Lady to plow snow.)

Hooray for a new tractor! But the old one does look forlorn with that snow hat...
Yesterday I took some time to go to the beach. I walked the dog. It was in the 70s. Supposed to be warm all weekend until the end of January. And not rainy (again) until Feb.
Braggy braggy to the Baggy!
Oh, also wore a tank top to take my walk. So sunny and warm.
There were tractors at the beach near the parking lot because they were doing work on the roadside. Does that help?
Tip from a messy person who hangs on to too much junk -- get rid of the old one. Find someone who needs it, saving it for "just in case" or "we might need it someday" will only result in it becoming a lump every winter.
See, one of the pleasures of living in the country is that you have room for all this stuff, if you don't have to keep it indoors. One of the not-exactly-pleasures (challenges! that must be the word I want) of living in the country is the need for backups.
Does it still run? Can you do anything with it besides measuring snow? Can you sell it? (to a good home.) Are its parts compatible with any other machinery on the place?
It's just not suitable for a planter, not even for sunflowers.

kcinnova - it does look forlorn, doesn't it?
Janell - it warmed up here, finally! It's above freezing, but not quite tank top weather.... at least, not without a sweater over it! :)
messymimi - oh, the old loader is still in working condition and will be used for other tasks that the tractor can't handle, but the old tractor (whose transmission has decided to only work in reverse!) could certainly be sold for parts. If it were up to me, that is. But it's not. (It's still sitting at MIL's in the field where it balked.)
Solarity - yes, it still works fine. The Rancher will use it for the heavier tasks that the tractor can't handle. And yes, the need for back-up is an ever-present reality on the farm/ranch.
Cool photo! I'm not sure I'd have wanted the new tractor. A bale loader that weighs a ton so I couldn't plow would appeal to me.
Shut up, Janell!

We got a heap of snow on Friday too. And now it's freaking cold. January is almost over, right?
Oh, poor John! The Deere is covered in snow. Good thing we are finally getting our January thaw :0
