Practice Makes Perfect

The Bag Lady has quite a sense of accomplishment today. She was a busy little beaver yesterday! She fed her cows and the calves. She also put out bedding for the calves again. She did some sewing, and, last but definitely not least, managed (finally) to steam-clean her living room carpet.

Then she fell into bed sometime around 1 am. (In fact, immediately after she finished posting this!)

Here is a photo of what she's been so busy sewing:

This is the practice dress for the dress she is going to make for her niece. Actually, this is the second practice dress (the Bag Lady really believes in the old adage "practice makes perfect"!) She first made the dress out of broadcloth and it will be winging it's way to her niece this weekend. She will try it on and see how it's going to fit. When it comes back, the Bag Lady will make note of any adjustments that need to be made, then start on the real dress!

She has another physio appointment today, so will be off to town yet again! This is proving a little trying for the Bag Lady - she's not accustomed to going to town so often. Especially in the winter when the roads aren't always the best. Maybe this time around, she'll finish up her Christmas shopping!

What about the rest of you? Are you finished shopping and all ready for Christmas?

WOW! Looks amazing, she will LOVE. Can't wait to see the finished article!

I have finished shopping and am now stressing about baking (I'm leaving making dessert til Christmas Eve when I won't get time to go to the shops if it all goes wrong!! Cross your culinary fingers for me, Bag Lady!)

Please be safe driving!

Excellent work on the dress, dfBL.
Good luck with driving, shopping, physio, etc.
Christmas shopping is largely done. I have to wrap a few things. I'm about as ready as I ever get.

How pretty! Very impressed with your talent!
My family decided to scale back Christmas as far as gifts go, so am a little less stressed in that regard. We are just getting together for dinner and fun Xmas Eve - yay!

The dress is lovely! Lucky niece, to have a talented & generous aunt like you!

Miz - yeah, I was amazed I finally got the damned carpet cleaned, too! *chortle*

TA - I'm hoping she will consent to model the finished dress for my blog!
What are you making for dessert? Have you decided?

dfLeah - Good for you! I hope to be able to say the same after today.

Missicat - thanks! I have very few presents left to buy, but they are the tough ones.....

Javachick - thanks! She's a pretty good niece, too!

I'm going for baked lemon cheesecake! I have a recipe which is tried and tested but I'm a sod for improvising at the last minute (I know I know, no respect for authority!)

That's a PRACTICE dress?! It's gorgeous!

I've done most of my shopping but have some left... and I feel really silly because my best friend called me yesterday all excited because he got me my present already. And he's TERRIBLE for doing things like that on time. So I really gotta get him his present quick!

Drive safe.

Your neice is lucky to have an aunt like you. Last gift is being picked up tonight on the way home from work.

I decided NOT to shop this year. Yes, that's right. Other than the ornaments that I make each year for my neices and nephews and the holiday cards I send out, I'm not doin' nuthin' and it feels marvelous! I will get a few small stocking stuffers for the hubs but we are not exchanging gifts. :)
This may be the best Christmas ever!

And that dress is lovely! You are one talented bag lady!

the Bag Lady said...

Sagan - thanks! I learned a few things about this particular pattern while making this dress, so I'll hopefully have no trouble with the next one!

Tom - Oh - I'm jealous that you're so close to being done!

Lucas - what a good idea - the Rancher says all he wants is a new pair of socks. Sheesh, I might even be able to handle that! (too bad I'm such a terrible knitter....)

Wow, the dress is beautiful!! You're inspiring me--sewing is one of the activities on my goals list. Hope I get to it soon!

Stay warm and watch out for cows on your trips into town. I just heard where an airplane collided with one. On the runway, of course.

the Bag Lady said...

Melissa - an airplane? And a cow? OMG! Wha....Where?

The dress is lovely. Looks like you need no more practice!

I think we might have to start calling you dress lady... My server is out so I can't work and I can't email! Nap time!

Reb said...

Wow, that is lovely Sis. Well done! Can't wait to see it in that lovely fabric though.

Other than a screw up at LD where they are developing something for me, my shopping is done...of course the things I am making aren't. Oh well.

the Bag Lady said...

Thanks, BG! Now, if the actual dress turns out as well, I'll be pleased!

Marianne - I'm jealous of your nap! I could use one....

Reb - thanks! Hope you get everything you are making finished up in time.

Wow, that's so pretty! And what a smart idea, to make a "practice" dress.

She's very lucky!

the Bag Lady said...

Thanks, Crabby! I hope the actual dress turns out as well.

That's just a pratice dress? Looks pretty good to me.
I made 2 practice "Mother of the groom" dresses before making the real one for my son's wedding last year. Worked out just fine.

You're making me look forward to After the Move is Finished, when all my sewing stuff will be available. I haven't made anything in two years because I go for weeks between sewing sessions, and "we might be able to move soon!"
In spite of having so much moving left to do I managed to make door decorations for all three houses today. (The two we're moving out of need decorations to help them look occupied during Christmas burglary season.)

Shammikite - thanks! I didn't want to screw up with the "real" fabric, so I made two practice dresses, too!

Mary Anne - it is great to be able to sit down and sew when you want to - I'm sure you're looking forward to it!

Okay, Baggie, here's the deal. You cook, you sew, you garden, you can, you take care of the livestock, and then you gaily trot off to steam clean--you're making me look bad. Can't you be mediocre at something? Anything? And for goodness sakes, that gorgeous dress is not my size!

Geosomin said...

Good plan with the "fake" dress...my mum-in-law always makes the stuff with really like fabric out of cheap stuff first to size it on people. Lets her ge the screw ups out of the way on the dummy dress.
It looks very nice and simple. Very cute dress...

It's not Butterick is it? :)

Geosomin said...

By like I mean nice.
Sorry...off to bed with me...

the Bag Lady said...

Oh, Amy - I'm so mediocre at so many things, I amaze myself!!!!
Damn, does this mean I have to get some more fabric and make the dress again, in a smaller size?

Geo - I learned a long time ago to make a practice dress if the material is really nice (or expensive) or the pattern looks complicated.
This pattern is a "See and Sew", which is made by Simplicity.

What a beautiful dress! How neat that you make it more than once. She's a lucky niece indeed!

(And I'm a fortunate future daughter-in-law - my future Mom is doing the alterations on my wedding gown. I wish I could sew!)

the Bag Lady said...

Aleta - it's never too late to learn to sew! And it's so rewarding.

Lucky niece!
Today (Friday) most of the mailing is completed. Now for some reason I am supposed to put out more decorations (what? the tree isn't enough?) and bake (cookies? what are those?) and wrap presents for my cast of characters (most gifts already purchased).

Stay safe on those roads!

the Bag Lady said...

kcinnova - you are ahead of me - I haven't gotten the mailing done... might have to send Happy New Year cards, instead!

Dang, BL! That's some impressive sewing! My machine has been in a box for the last few months. One of these days I'll get it out and try to make a pair of pajama pants! I think I can do that, after making a robe this summer.

I'm sure your niece will love it! The cut and shape looks wonderful!

the Bag Lady said...

Thanks Gena! I'm sure you can manage some pajama pants - probably with one hand tied behind you! I've seen your knitting and die with envy every time!! You're so talented!
