Treasure, Methinks

When we left the Bag Lady yesterday, she was almost finished her "project". She took the doors to town and had the glass shop cut some glass for them. They were really busy, so she brought the glass home and installed it herself. (She didn't want anything to interfere with her post today, and they weren't sure they would get to it in a timely fashion!)

She mentioned that the back and the bottom shelf were a little warped, so she replaced them. Here is the new back:

And here is the new bottom shelf:

She stripped the whole unit down to bare wood, and decided she liked the colour of the wood so well that she didn't want to put any stain on it, so she just varnished it. She put on three coats of a satin finish polyurethane (for those of you who care about such things).

Are you ready to see how it looks?

TA DA!!!

(Sorry the picture is a little dark - this was taken with the china cabinet in place in her kitchen)

Here is the Bag Lady's paltry collection of silver:

Here is a side-by-side comparison:

So, what do you think?

Remember yesterday when the Bag Lady mentioned that the dump is now called a "transfer station"? Well, she "transferred" this china cabinet from the dump to her house, and she is ever so glad she did!!

HAPPY CANADA DAY!

Very nice! It looks so much better with the wood grain coming through. No one would ever guess where you found it.

Happy Canada Day!

the Bag Lady said...

Thanks, Gena! And hubby is under strict orders that if any of the neighbors come over and say "Gee, I had one just like that, but I tried to paint it....." His response is to be that it's been in the family for years!!!

Maggie - it's easy enough to learn - if I can do it, anyone can!!
Hmmm - maybe there's a blog post in that - a tutorial on refinishing furniture.....

You were so right to let that beautiful pale grain show trough! Now it's a bona fide treasure. I was at the Met in NYC yesterday, and I'm pretty sure I saw its twin in the Arts and Crafts furniture section. Just lovely.

the Bag Lady said...

Thanks for your kind words, Clare! I am a big fan of light coloured wood, and couldn't bring myself to change this. Glad you like it!
