Friday's Random Round-up (Again)

(The Bag Lady apologizes to everyone who is seeing this for the second time, and to the rest of you who couldn't see it the first time! She isn't sure why Blogger wouldn't accept what she had to say - it didn't seem offensive to HER!)

It's Friday again, and the Bag Lady has some random stuff to share. She was pretty excited because she has some American Kestrels nesting in the back yard. She tried to videotape them to share with you, but the sun was at the wrong angle and she couldn't get good resolution. She'll keep trying.

It's Calgary Stampede time again, which means the chuckwagon races are on. For all you city folk, click here for an explanation of chuckwagon racing. The Cowboy and the Bag Lady like to keep an eye on the race results, because several of the champion drivers hail from their community. In fact, the Cowboy has known several of them since they were kids. The Cowboy's uncle was involved in chuckwagon racing as an outrider when he was younger, so there has always been a lot of interest in the sport in his family. The Bag Lady doesn't want to play any favourites so she isn't going to mention any names. (Go Hughie!!)

It's been one of those weeks where things seem all topsy-turvy and discombobulated. (Don't you love that word? But just try and work it into a sentence....) The Cowboy is working, the weather hasn't been the greatest and the Bag Lady doesn't feel as though she has accomplished much. It won't be long before things will get really busy again, but right now feels like the lull before the storm. It's been a bit of a faltering start to haying season. The Cowboy is working unexpectedly long hours (and weekends!), the haybine is broken, and the weather hasn't been exactly co-operative.

The Bag Lady can do many things, but she is hopeless when it comes to machinery repair. If more than one part comes off when you take out a single bolt, she's in trouble when the time comes to put things back together. So, in spite of going to town and getting the part required to fix the haybine, she has to wait for the Cowboy to put it back together.

Speaking of the Cowboy, he mentioned again that he really doesn't like the nickname he's been stuck with, so we need to find something else to call him. The Bag Lady doesn't think he'd take too kindly to "Mr. Bag Lady", so she's throwing it out to you. Any suggestions? (Nothing too racy, though, because his mother reads this blog!!)

The Outlaw? (has a nice ring to it...)

Dragonslayer? (hmmm, kinda long.)

Studly? (his mama - remember?!)

As Terrie Farley Moran (who blogs over at Women of Mystery) pointed out recently on the Bag Lady's sisters' blog (Sibu Pegasus Power), the Bag Lady is slightly nick-name-impaired! (Terrie commented that she understood why the Bag Lady needed help naming her calves after she read the Bag Lady's suggestions for nicknames for a bear purchased by one of Reb's friends!) So make your suggestions for the Cowboy's new nickname in the comment section, if you so desire.

Oh, and one more thing! Look what the Bag Lady cooked up for supper the other night:

The very first feed of new potatoes from her garden.

Have a great weekend!

Oh I am so drooling for those new, red spuds.
Good for you for working discombobulated into your post.
Well done.

I suppose "Cow Whisperer" is too long to write? I'll give some thought to a nickname for him.

the Bag Lady said...

dfLeah - perhaps just the initials? CW. Hmmm, I'll have to run that past him.

Excellent! You enjoy your weekend as well! :)

mmm...those look so good!
I like "cow whisperer"!

Thanks, Mark!

Missicat - that does have a nice ring to it, doesn't it?

I am jealous that your garden has yielded enough for a meal. I have gotten exactly ONE tomato. And it's a cherry tomato at that. I'm still very, very hungry.

Hi, manager mom! Gosh, I'm sorry to hear you're starving - shall I send a care package? (your comment totally cracked me up - thanks!)

I do so love discombobulated, only secondary to cacophony. Both 50 cent words that I use frequently!

And I second missicat with the 'cow whisperer' although I quite like 'the cowboy'. It conjures up a better visual image.

Ooooh, conjure! Another good one!

Hi, Lucas! I love words - especially the expensive ones! Glad to know there are more people like me out there.
Thanks for stopping by!

Mmm potatoes. Sometimes I wonder if there really IS anything better than a meat-and-potatoes meal (but then I remember the chocolate. Somehow I don't think chocolate-meat-and-potatoes would work so well).

Kestrels are such gorgeous birds. You're so lucky to have them right in your backyard!

the Bag Lady said...

Sagan - yeah, chocolate...sigh.

The baby Kestrels are so darned cute - they sit with their fuzzy little heads poking out of the old woodpecker hole where the nest is and peep, getting louder and louder as their parents approach. I'm really hoping to get a video when they start to fly - we laughed our asses off at their antics last time! (hanging upside down from power lines, aiming for tree branches and missing....)

How about The Man in Black?
Can't say no to that? He can't not love Johnny Cash...:) (MIB for short?)

I like CW too

Well, I can see both posts, so I don't know what is up with blogger.

I want new potatoes too...have to remember to look at the market tomorrow.

How about...Mr.Potato Head...Spud ...Farmer...Trucker...Logger

Hm, seems like we are both nickname challenged.

I like Cow Whisperer too! Go for that one.

I LOVE red potatoes! Especially with fresh green beans.

I thought you might get a kick out of this story. About another cow named milkshake...

Geosomin - I'll have to run that one by him, too. He is a Cash fan...

Reb - actually leaning toward the Cow Whisperer, except for the length.
And I'm not sure what was going on this morning with Blogger. Something to do with the HTML, and you know how hopeless I am with that stuff!

the Bag Lady said...

SB - thanks - that is a good story! Poor cow, but at least she got rescued!

ooooh I like leah's!!

Miz - I'm leaning that way, too! Have to see what hubby thinks of that one.

I went to a chuck wagon race day in Canada years ago!! I've been to lots of proper race meets in the UK since (you know, the posh ones with fancy hats and champagne) and they were nothing like as much fun. Hooray for race day!!

Cowboy is a good pseudonym (can't spell), who wouldn't want to be a cowboy? I think he doth protest too much.

tokaiangel - you've been to Canada?!
Good for you! I've been to England, too, but didn't go to the horse-races! (no posh hats)
Hubby's aversion to the word "cowboy" is a long story.....
