Photo Finish Friday - The Good Old Days

The Bag Lady has been immersed in the past for much of the new year. She is the volunteer (aka unpaid with absolutely no experience) curator of the newly minted museum in her little community, and she and another volunteer have been working hard to accession the donations received so far from community members.

The Bag Lady has also been wasting spending time on Ancestry.com.

She has had this photo for many years, but has really had not very much information to go along with it. Angus was her great-grandmother's brother, and he moved his family away from Nebraska (where much of the rest of the family was residing at the time) in the late 1800's and contact with him was lost.
Thanks to Ancestry.com, the Bag Lady now has more information on that branch of the family!
(At least, she hopes there isn't another, completely unrelated family out there using this picture on their family tree!)

PFF is the brainchild of Leah at the Goat's Lunch Pail. Go check out her photo for today!

Very cool pic.
Angus looks like Samuel Clemens.

You're right! (I knew he reminded me of someone...) Perhaps we're related to ol' Sam, too!

It looks like he had very pronounced cheekbones...wonder when those were lost in the family line. Cool photo, thanks for sharing.

My coming moustache will more than make up for the lack of cheekbones.

My aunt has done a lot of genealogy research. It's pretty cool to find out more about where you come from!

Reb - I do see a resemblance to grandma there, though - something about the eye area.

Leah - that cracked me up!

Gena - it's addictive - I can (and have!) spend hours absorbed in researching family history! There have been a few surprises along the way, too.

Those old pics are so intriguing. Hope you can find your long lost cousins.

Cool!

And Ancestry.com is indeed a fascinating Time Suck. I had to cut myself off because hours and hours would fly by... it's great you're finding "lost" family branches!

Very cool, Baggie. Any relation to Davy? ;)

messymimi - I'm finding more long lost cousins than I have room for! :)

Mary Anne in Kentucky - yeah. The Samuel Clemens branch.

Crabby - I resisted Ancestry.com for a very long time..... but once you pay for it, you might as well use it, 'cause they charge by the year, with no refund!

Hilary - that was definitely a family story - grandma apparently used to claim he was a 42nd cousin - but it's been difficult to authenticate any relationship.

I can hear the siren call of that website. Must. Resist.

spokalulu - it's fun. Highly addictive and a real time suck, but fun!

I love old family pictures and this one is a really good one. You obviously come from a long line of handsome people. (Does Ancestry.com charge for access?)

Cheryl - thanks! Yes, they do charge... they advertise it as a "monthly" fee, then charge an entire year to your credit card and, if you try to cancel, tell you to read the fine print - no refund!
On the other hand, it's my own fault for not cancelling before the 14-day free trial ended.
And I am finding all kinds of information that I didn't have before.
