Photo Finish Friday

The Rancher went back to work for a day last week to fill in for someone else. This area has been hit by the Mountain Pine Beetle, so the damaged pine trees have been cut down and logged in an attempt to salvage the wood.

This is almost at the city limits, in a very exclusive subdivision filled with million dollar homes. The beetles don't care that they are lowering the property values of all those fancy houses, they just love those old growth forests full of huge pine trees!

Photo-finish Friday is the creation of the Bag Lady's cousin, Leah, and you can check out her photo here at the Goat's Lunch Pail.

*sigh*
Not for the rich folks, mind you.
I'm sighing for the loss of old growth forests.

kcinnova - I agree! It is sad to see all those reddish-brown dead trees everywhere. Too bad the powers-that-be were reluctant to take the proper steps to get rid of these beetles way back when they first discovered them in British Columbia.
Sigh.

Don't you think those beetles would love to eat some expensive housing too? Poor rich people.
Sad.

We have an ugly oak disease that's even supposedly attacking the redwoods. Will be really nice here in another 100 years.

My kids are in love with your heavy machinery. They want to come live with you now:)

Glad to have you aboard and thanks for the linkie.

I feel for the trees. It's sad to see them ravaged.

We've stopped getting the county to come and check our trees. They took down some of our pines that we feel were o.k. We hope that none of our other pines develop anything because we have a lot of them. It's good to see the rancher getting rid of the problem. I hope those rich people don't take it out on him too bad!

POD - I wonder if we could convince the beetles to eat the expensive shake roofing....
I wonder, too, what the world will look like in a hundred years.

Charlotte - send 'em my way! I'll teach them how to operate all kinds of heavy machinery (starting with the lawn mower and working up from there! - Can you tell I just finished 3 hours of lawn mowing?) :)

dfLeah - I do, too. There are some beautiful areas being decimated by these beetles.

Redbush - I hope you don't lose too many pines, either - your yard is so gorgeous!

Nature is cruel sometimes.

I also hate to see trees go, no matter the reason.

Here, the invasion is Emerald Ash Borers. I have a lot of ashes (though not as many as the hickories) but so far no borers. There are triangular purple cardboard traps out again this year, and their presence is confirmed in the county.

That's sad to hear that so many beautiful trees are being damaged. That's gotta ache.

Maybe if the rich people wouldn't build in the old forests the bugs would stay away.

Am going to check out the Photo-finish Friday pics.

Hmmmm. Nothing will grow in my yard. Can I blame it on the pine beetles?
