It was a gorgeous weekend around the ranch. Hot, with a slight breeze to keep it from being unbearable. Well, unless you insist on wearing fur....
The Bag Lady went out early to water her plants and check cows. She remembered her camera and took a few pictures to share with you. These are wild roses, which are the provincial flower of Alberta.
The Bag Lady was struck by the depth of colour in this petunia when the early morning sun hit it.
She still had her camera close at hand while she had a cup of coffee with the Rancher on the deck, and noticed what looked at first like a large bee. She watched it for a few seconds before identifying it as a baby hummingbird! Can you see it in this picture?
How about in this one?
It turned out to be incredibly difficult to get a good photograph of the little thing.
It is actually in this picture, too..... if you enlarge the photo, and look to the left of the pagoda, and up a little ways, you'll see a little orange blur - that might be the hummingbird. The Bag Lady is including this picture to give you some idea of how tiny the hummer is.
A little later in the day there were two of them! So tiny, and so quick.

I miss our bullmastiff but that brought back vivid memories of his lolling about in the yard looking at me as if to say:
SERIOUSLY WOMAN? WHY DO YOU LIVE IN THE LAND OF UNFLAGGING HEAT?!
I love the wild roses. I think I saw the hummingbird in the pics. Good for you. We don't have any visit our yard so I don't get to see them. They are very difficult to photograph.
Yes, the fact that you even got it in the photo at all is an accomplishment. Thanks for sharing the pics.
Nice hummingbird photos! Mom puts out feeders every year and gets tons of them, but I've never been able to get a good picture. I think we're supposed to have them in Louisiana, but I've yet to see one.
Carla - I don't know how you live in that kind of heat!
dfLeah - the hummingbirds move so fast, and the babies are so tiny (think bumblebee), it was very hard to take a picture.

Gena - I have tried countless times to photograph the adults with limited success. It was even harder to try to capture the babies!
I saw a hummingbird last night as he zoomed past the living room--"Wait! That's not a moth!" There wouldn't have been time to pick up the camera if it had been beside me. I've never seen a baby one at all.

I went back-country camping this weekend and saw a wild rose for the first time. I had no idea that a wild rose was so different from the roses we see in stores! Wild roses are gorgeous. They might just be one of my new favourite flowers.
Did I send you a pic of the baby hummer sitting on our feeder earlier this year, little guy was there for about 15 minutes, just resting and perhaps waiting for mom to tell him what to do..he was so fluffy and much larger than adults ..our young kitty caught a male three weeks ago, took it away from her but too late for the little guy..when I looked up info on hummers was happy to see that the mom raises little ones and males have no input at all as I was feeling so sad that perhaps young ones would have one less parent to look after them.. wish I could have perserved him somehow - he was so tiny and beautiful ..louder bell on Sam's collar now.. have had to put up two feeders as the males are so aggressive and fight over the one we had ..also raised the planters which have hummer attractive flowers higher on benches for the next month or so until they leave.

Cuzzie - no, you didn't send me the picture! The baby was so fluffy, it looked larger than mom? This one must have lost some fluff, then - it looked so tiny. I'd love to see the picture!
Your cat must be pretty fast - our younger cat is a birder, too - hope he never catches a hummingbird.

I just loved these pictures! That petunia is gorgeous and you can see just how velvety it is. Great shot. The roses are so pretty.
The hummingbirds are adorable. We have a lot of them but I haven't ever seen a baby. We have a feeder outside the kitchen window and I've gotten a few decent shots that way. You almost have to be where they can't see you.
