Sizzle

The Bag Lady's area has been sweltering under a bit of a heat wave for the last while (she is not complaining, don't ever think she would, because she knows that in 6 months or so it could be -40! She just hopes that this doesn't mean the cold weather will conversely last as long as the heat wave has...)

The Bag Lady decided yesterday that she simply had to mow her lawn. She uses a ride-on mower, and was sensible enough to wear a hat. But she had to wait until the dew burned off the grass, and what with one thing and another, it was the hottest part of the day before she got started. It takes her a solid 3 hours to mow her lawn (sometimes more), and by the time she finished, she was definitely warm. She stopped once to rescue a toad, and once more to fill her machine with gas. She took advantage of that stop to get a drink of water.

She is very glad that she decided to wear the hat (except for when the grasshopper that somehow managed to get under it was trying to jump out - that is definitely a unique feeling!) because even with the hat, she thinks she may have gotten a touch of heat stroke. She ended up with a skull-crushing headache last night that prevented her from even thinking, let alone trying to come up with a blog post!

Between her headache and the heat, she had a terrible time sleeping last night and so, apparently, did the Princess, because she woke the Bag Lady at 5 am, demanding to be let out. Sigh.

The Bag Lady apologizes for this rather lame post and hopes she'll have something better for you tomorrow.

You rescued a toad. You're my hero.
I suppose the grasshopper needed a hat and yours was handy.

I hope you feel better soon, Toad Whisperer.

Hope you feel better. Sunstroke is no fun. :(

I didn't sleep well last night either - think the cats are happy to have us home because George kept walking on me and poking at me looking for cuddles. Then he slept on top of me.

You be careful out there! Hopefully tonight your body will just let you crash out and make up for your lost sleep.

dfLeah - the grasshopper must have decided my hat didn't fit him... And the toad almost met a ghastly end - it's a good thing I saw him when I did!

Thanks, Hilary - the headache seems to be gone now.

Javachick - thanks! Last night our old cat spent quite some time standing on the bed, staring at hubby, probably willing him to move over and make more room. He finally jumped off the bed in a huff and went to sleep elsewhere! (the cat, not the hubby!)

Scrumpy - I sure hope so. In fact, I hope I can hold out until tonight, because I know if I nap during the day, I definitely won't sleep tonight!

It's been a hot few days hasn't it?
Take it easy today. CRossing my fingers that you can get a good sleep tonight and make up for it all.

Geo - it's hot there, too, isn't it? Our forecast is for continued hot weather through the next weekend! I love it, but should have been a wee bit smarter yesterday! it was +30C.

Heat illness is no joke, so please take care of yourself. I don't want to contemplate life without news from The Bag Lady!

the Bag Lady said...

Aw, thanks, messymimi! That's very sweet of you to say. And don't worry, I am staying cooler today!

I assume just setting fire to the grass is not an option???

That was the best post ever!

I'm glad you wore the hat. I know how much you hate them. We had rain overnight so it isn't too bad today...yet.

Feel better soon - heatstroke is not fun.
Must have something in the air - couldn't sleep either. Both kitties just HAD to be on top of me and were fighting for the best spot. Most of the night. grrr.

Anonymous - too many more days of this heat, and it'll burn the grass off, anyway! :)

POD - you're so easy to please! :)

Reb - we could use a little rain, but not until the Rancher gets the hay baled!

Missicat - cats are funny that way, aren't they?

Heatstroke SUCKS. Hope you're feeling better this morning!

the Bag Lady said...

Oh, yes, Marste, thanks. Just feel a wee bit disconnected from lack of sleep. (or from siphoning dandelion wine.....but that's a story for another day!) :)

Yay on rescuing the toad! I'm glad you're feeling better today. Heat can take a lot out of you, even when you're used to it.

Thanks, BG - the toad is lucky I saw him when I did!
And I am much better today, thanks!

Toad Lovers of the World, Unite!

I have been reading old issues of the Reader's Digest and came across a lawn mower story. I can't find the issue so I'll paraphrase...

The man broke a cardinal rule of lawn mowing when he blindly pushed his mower under the low-hanging branches of a bush.

Suddenly, something was flung back from the mower blades and into his face. He gingerly felt his forehead and was appalled to feel a damp, rough lump.

Surprised there wasn't any pain or blood he was about to check again just as he noticed a webbed foot dangling down into his line of vision.

He happily returned the stunned (and unhurt) toad to its hiding place under the tree.

Hope your head is all better. I recommend a few cool ones.

I meant bush, not tree.

Dangit, where do toads hang out?

Sagan said...

Aw hope you're feeling better. Drink water! Stay out of the sun! Rest a while! :) Loving any bit of heat I can get. Boo hiss winter.

Lil Nana - that story cracked me right up! The idea of a toad hanging off that guys forehead.... eeuuww!

Toads can generally be found hanging out anywhere it's cool and damp. The one I rescued was making it's way across the lawn toward the bushes behind our house...I just helped him along.

Sagan - I'm with you! Boo, hiss to winter! Love the heat.
