It's Monday!?

So.

The Bag Lady entered her sunrise picture in the contest. The contest opened for public viewing on Saturday, so she and the Rancher slipped in and had a look. There are over 30 other photographs in the competition, and some of them are fabulous! In fact, most of them are fabulous. The Bag Lady is pretty sure her photo is not going to win, but that's okay.

There are also 14 original artworks entered in the competition, and most of them are pretty good. A couple of them are really good, and one of them is fabulous. The competition is a "people's choice" sort of deal - whichever painting garners the most votes wins. And whichever photograph garners the most votes wins in the other category. The Bag Lady and the Rancher cast their votes for the fabulous painting. And the Bag Lady is pretty confident that her photograph got at least one vote (she peeked at the Rancher's ballot.....)

This is only the second year that they have added a photography section to this contest - in previous years, it was open only to original artwork - but the photography portion has generated a lot of new participants.

In other news, the Rancher's uncle had his surgery on Friday, and is recovering. He did not react well to the anaesthetic, which made for some interesting moments for the nursing staff, but once the medication wore off, he settled down. Now he just has to get healed up and things can get back to normal - well, as normal as things ever get around these parts.

The weather is slowly warming up, which makes the Bag Lady happy. It would make her happier if it would warm up a little more quickly, but she knows there's not much she can do about it, and at least the days are getting longer! There will soon be calves to contend with, too, so the Bag Lady is hoping for some warmer nights.

wow, 30 photos is some steep competition! I hope you do well, though :) It is a beautiful photo.

What a fab thing to be a part of BL! It's so fun to learn about photography from others! I think that's got to be my favorite part about it. Speaking of sharing, have you seen this site yet? http://1x.com/ Some of these photos just take my breath away :)

Hope you had a great weekend!

Im so proud of you for ENTERING. it is so easy to wimp out and decide you "arent gonna win" and chicken out of submitting the photo entirely.

Good luck on the contest--it's a beautiful photo!

And I suspect there may be an amusing anecdote involving the Rancher's Uncle and the nursing staff--but I understand that discretion may be advised to respect his privacy. I'll let my imagination run wild...

Yay! I'm so glad you entered the contest!! It sounds like a good experience no matter what happens (although I'm still rooting for you to win!).

I agree with everyone else - I think it's great that you entered the contest! I would never be brave enough to do something like that.

It has warmed up here too - so glad to have temperatures staying above 0. We got heavy rain Friday night and so much of the snow disappeared over night, it's actually starting to feel like spring!

Good for you for entering the contest. Your pic is fab, too.

I surely do hope calving goes well and it's nice and warm and not too oozy out in the pasture.

Christine - Thanks! And yes, it is pretty steep competition - some of the photos were incredible and beautifully (professionally) framed.

Rupal - it is fun - it felt very strange to see my little photo on the wall with the others! And thanks for the site - I'll check it out.

Miz - I almost did wimp out. And when I saw some of the others, I almost wished I had! The contest is open to professionals as well as amateurs, and there is only one class, so some of the photos have been photo-shopped and tweaked...

Crabby - thanks!
And yes, there were some amusing moments - I'm still trying to scrub some of the sights off my brain! But....

Charlotte - thanks - that's very sweet! It would be wonderful to win, but highly unlikely. In the original artwork category, there will be three winners, but only one in the photography section. With 30-some photos and only 14 paintings, seems backwards, doesn't it?

Thanks, JavaChick! I waited until the last minute to enter - was still being a chicken!
Glad to hear it's starting to feel like spring there. It is getting muddy and slushy around here, slowly.

dfLeah - we were posting at the same time - sorry.
Thanks - I'm pretty sure I won't win, but it was fun to be a part of it, anyway!
And I had better get off my ever-expanding ass and go check to see if we have any calves, hadn't I?

Whether you win or not, people (besides us) will get to see that marvelous photo!

Mary Anne in Kentucky - that is true, that is true! Thanks for pointing that out.

In spite of it being smaller than a lot of the others, and not photo-shopped, nor professionally framed, it was holding it's own simply because of the beauty of the subject matter!

I think you can win! Would rush up there to vote if I could...

Missicat - aww, thanks! That's very sweet of you!

I'm glad the MIB is feeling better...anaesthetic can really knock some people out. It would make my grandpa rave like a nutter and be quite difficult to handle.. and it makes my Mum violently ill. I'm sort of hoping I don't need it, as I imagine it isn't my friend either. Hope he is resting up at thome and not trying to do too much too fast.

I think it's great you're entering the contest...I like contests like that, simply to see what other people's "favourite" photo or art piece might be. So many different things to see. I'm surprised they allow photoshop tweaking though...most contests have an "as is" photo and a "modified" photo portion, to keep the pros from diddling too much with their work. After a while photoshop almost turns a photo into a work of art in progress...it's neat what you can do with it, but I think it's unfair to put them up against your everyday photographer if you get to tweak it and they don't have the capability.

Here's hoping you get lots of smiling people from seeing your picture :)

I think it's great that you even entered. You have inspired me, to pick up my camera again.

Glad the ranchers Uncle is doing well.

{{Hugs}} Hoping you have a warm and full of sunshine week. :)

Brave to enter a photo contest.
I commend you.

Since you are the bag lady, do you ever carry a calve around in a bag like those posh folks carry their pet poodles?

Levi said...

Oh, and the beer and droopy testicles comments were funny! I read them late Friday and had a good laugh.

Geo - anaesthetic effects everyone differently, but a lot of elderly folks have a really hard time with it. Unfortunately, the Rancher's uncle was one of those. Fortunately (for him!) he doesn't remember any of it. I, on the other hand, will be scarred for life..... :)

At least a couple of the photos were "shopped", but whatevah....
(There was nothing in the rules saying you couldn't, but I didn't because I didn't need to! All I did was crop it a little.)

Maggie - thanks! Glad to hear you are taking up your camera again! And thanks for the hugs and sunshine!

POD - Not posh enough to carry a calf around with me; although, the Rancher had to take one to the vet one early morning (it got stepped on and broke it's shoulder). On the way back from the vet, with the calf with it's bright purple cast on it's leg on the seat beside him, he went through the drive-thru at McDonald's to get a much-needed coffee. Caused quite an uproar - the entire staff had to come see the baby in the truck with him!

Glad you got a chuckle out of my traumatic experience! :)

Oh I hope you win.. I hope you win.. I hope you win! Did you take any photos of the display?

Glad to hear that the unc is doing better.

the Bag Lady said...

Hilary - I never thought to take photos of the photos! Crap.

Thanks! I, too, hope Unc heals fast and can go home soon.

HURRAY for the warmer weather! That must be a beautiful exhibition of all those photographs and art.

Yay You! I know how hard it is for us to put ourselves out there to be judged, so BRAVO!!!

Good luck with the calving. Glad to hear Uncle is doing alright.

I agree with what all of them above said.

I'm anxious to know how the contest comes out--and I'm also curious to see what photo could beat yours; it's so terrific.

Geosomin said...

WHoops...misread that. Thought the Rancher had surgery...not his uncle.
Oops.
You make what happened with the anaesthetic sound so intriguing...
