Oh, Holy.......

......calf?

Meet Hayseus, our little Christmas surprise!

Imagine his surprise when the Rancher happened to spot one of the heifers lying in the snow, apparently in the midst of calving! He managed to sneak up on her and give her a little assistance, and she is now the proud mama of a handsome young calf. The first-time mom is quite protective of her calf, and will probably make a good mother, as long as she will stop licking him long enough to let him get a drink!
The Rancher gave him a little jump-start, and hopefully he will survive and thrive. It is cold here, and the poor little guy may lose the tips of his ears and tail, so send warm thoughts this way to help the weather smarten up, 'kay?
(Calving season isn't supposed to start around here until the middle of March. Someone must not have told this heifer.)
Merry Christmas!

What a surprise! It looks like his coat froze before she could lick any of it dry, so no wonder she's making that a priority. What I can see of her face looks quite worried. I hope his ears and tail will be all right.

(And speaking of ears, how is your poor old cow with the dog-torn ear?)

Hilary - thanks! It worked - it did warm up here... damn, you're good!

Mary Anne in Kentucky - still not sure about his ears and tail, but he is up and going! We put him and momma in the corral this morning, unfortunately neccessitating turning out the old girl who had her ear chewed. She is fine, though, but will now have to walk a little further for water.

Leah - how could he not be special? He's a tough little guy!

David - thanks, and a very Merry Christmas to you and your family!

Reb - he may lose the tips of his ears or tail, but he seems in pretty good health otherwise!

Oh, gracious! And i complain about mama cats not getting the memo that kitten season should be through.

I hope he survives and thrives.

messymimi - we took him and his momma to the barn this morning and he is snug as a baby in a manger! He should be fine now.
**Note to self - re-send memo to all cows regarding appropriate calving weather!**

What is that glop in the hay?

the Bag Lady said...

Bookwitch - I know! The calves have the same effect on me!

Pearl - thanks! We need all the warmth we can get. :)

Anonymous - err.... what glop? I don't see a glop... oh, that?? You don't wanna know. (mom, is that you?)

What a darling little guy. You can just see by the expression on his mama's face that she's totally besotted by her son. Isn't that cool? Boy, I hope your weather improves...we don't want him losing the tip of anything. (So....where's the papa?)
