Not Lost!

So, the Bag Lady finally found her salt and pepper shaker collection and guess what? They were right where she thought they were all along....she just didn't look deep enough in the box! Here is a slightly blurry picture of most of them. (The Christmas shakers are not in this picture because they are in a different box - she actually uses them at Christmas.) Click on the photo to enlarge to see the details of the shakers:

Here is one of her favourite sets - can you imagine actually using these on the table?

And here is the set that will forever remind her of Tokaiangel :

Finally, while these are not shakers, they are for salt. Originally, salt cellars were set on the table, complete with their own tiny spoons. The Bag Lady's grandmother had six of them (she may have had far more - the Bag Lady's sister, Reb, has a couple) and the Bag Lady ended up with these four.

Unfortunately, the Bag Lady didn't do a very good job of photographing them, despite actually putting on her reading glasses so she could see the screen on her camera. Sheesh.

BL - the dog + the fire hydrant, my, what a classy addition to your table setting! HAHA, who comes up with these ideas?

Christine - I know! It was a gift, what can I say? (Actually, I think it's really funny, but I'm slightly warped.)

Salt cellers! I have seven (six clear, one amber) cut glass ones that belonged to a great-aunt, but only four little tiny spoons. This is never a problem since the table only seats six. We can share.

Mary Anne in Kentucky, whose grandmother had a pair of turkey gobbler salt and pepper shakers only used at Thanksgiving that she had forgotten about until now

Mary Anne - I forgot to put my turkey gobbler Thanksgiving salt and pepper shakers in the picture! Dang.

My parents found grandmas' salt cellars forgotten in a cupboard in the old house years after dad's parents had moved out, leaving it (not exactly) empty. No spoons, though. We picked some up at antique sales.

What an interesting and eclectic little collection! When it comes to what goes on the table I'm pretty traditional, but I'm always fascinated by the many different ways people can come up with variations on a theme.

BG - I'm usually pretty traditional, too. Old-fashioned, even.

Most of the items in my collection were gifts, and I really like some of them, so it was fun to bring them out and have a look at them. But they are nestled back in their box now, except for a few. I've decided that I'll rotate them every month or so - that way, I don't have to dust ALL of them, but still get to look at them!

Oh, myyyy. These are joyfully tacky. I love them. Now that they are out of storage, what will you do to them, with them?

I looked at the detailed picture and thought, "My favorite is the dog and the fire hydrant" and then you showed your favorite. Too funny.

Also, I looked at your profile and saw the bag idea - Cool!

Linda - put most of them back into storage! I'm planning on keeping a few out on display, and rotating them every month or so (when I remember....) - that way, I don't have to dust ALL of them! :)

Aleta - that is the cutest, isn't it? :)
Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment! Hope you come back again.

Marianne - make sure you call me when you get those shot glasses out! I'll come and test them to make sure none of them leak..... :)

You will have to show off you nutcrackers (lol) at Christmas ;)

So glad you found those Sis! I had forgotten what so many of them looked like.

the Bag Lady said...

Reb - to be honest, I had forgotten a few of them, too! It was fun to unwrap them and have a look again.

Ah, yes, the nutcrackers. People will start to think I'm the nut for collecting things! :)

LOVE the boozy mouse!! It all makes sense now! I had lots of booze with the Boozy Mouse herself last night, we both woke up at 4am with bad tummies and headaches... that darn grape!

Love the collection, is that you on the tractor? :0)

dfLeah - thanks! There are some cute ones, aren't there?

TA - I'm glad you had a good time with your boozy mouse! Too bad about the tummy and headache, but that's the price you have to pay for a good time!

Oh those are cute. I love the little cameras, telephones(?) and the tiny raspberries. But yes, that Dalmatian and hydrant are great!

my kiddos would go nuts playing with those ;)

Hilary - I thought you might appreciate the cameras!

Annette - I'm sure your kids would love those!

So glad you found them!

Love the dog and fire hydrant. We're so lazy we tend to use the salt and pepper containers straight from the store; perhaps it's time to get a bit more creative!

the Bag Lady said...

Crabby - the ones we use everyday are not fancy!

I really like the dog & fire hydrant...Guess I may be a little warped too. :)

Great collection - looks like you have a lot of cute ones.

Javachick - everyone needs a little warped-ness in their lives!

I love the little individual salt cellars. I have two sets of individual salt and peppers that were my Grandma Georgie's. I wish I had more, I think they are such a neat little addition to a table setting.

the Bag Lady said...

SB - they are really cool, aren't they? Reminiscent of a more "formal" time.

Salt cellars!
I have one of my grandmas...I was using it as a sugar bowl. My mum said grandma used it for salt or other spices but couldn't recall what they were called. Thanks!

I love the salt and pepper shakers...did you ever use any of them??

the Bag Lady said...

Geo - I have used some of them, but not all. I use the Christmas ones every year (I'll take a photo of them when I pull them out for Xmas). Most of those pictured have never been used, though.

The salt cellars are really tiny. Apparently, there are bigger ones, called master salts that sat at the head of the table and were passed around. The closer you sat to the salt, the higher your status was. (Back when salt was scarce.)

df Bag lady,

I am so glad you found your collection. I love the salt cellars.

Thanks, dfTerrie - I'm kinda relieved myself!
And those salt cellars are pretty cool, aren't they?

Clare2e said...

They are all so charming! Thanks for sharing them. I think the salt cellars are very handsome and civilized!

the Bag Lady said...

Thanks, Clare! Now, if I could only convince the Rancher we should use those salt cellars - might bring some civilization to the ol' stump ranch!
