Finally, while these are not shakers, they are for salt. Originally, salt cellars were set on the table, complete with their own tiny spoons. The Bag Lady's grandmother had six of them (she may have had far more - the Bag Lady's sister, Reb, has a couple) and the Bag Lady ended up with these four.
Unfortunately, the Bag Lady didn't do a very good job of photographing them, despite actually putting on her reading glasses so she could see the screen on her camera. Sheesh.
BL - the dog + the fire hydrant, my, what a classy addition to your table setting! HAHA, who comes up with these ideas?

ReplyDeleteSalt cellers! I have seven (six clear, one amber) cut glass ones that belonged to a great-aunt, but only four little tiny spoons. This is never a problem since the table only seats six. We can share.

Mary Anne - I forgot to put my turkey gobbler Thanksgiving salt and pepper shakers in the picture! Dang.
ReplyDeleteMy parents found grandmas' salt cellars forgotten in a cupboard in the old house years after dad's parents had moved out, leaving it (not exactly) empty. No spoons, though. We picked some up at antique sales.
What an interesting and eclectic little collection! When it comes to what goes on the table I'm pretty traditional, but I'm always fascinated by the many different ways people can come up with variations on a theme.

ReplyDeleteMost of the items in my collection were gifts, and I really like some of them, so it was fun to bring them out and have a look at them. But they are nestled back in their box now, except for a few. I've decided that I'll rotate them every month or so - that way, I don't have to dust ALL of them, but still get to look at them!
Oh, myyyy. These are joyfully tacky. I love them. Now that they are out of storage, what will you do to them, with them?

ReplyDeleteI love the little individual salt cellars. I have two sets of individual salt and peppers that were my Grandma Georgie's. I wish I had more, I think they are such a neat little addition to a table setting.

Geo - I have used some of them, but not all. I use the Christmas ones every year (I'll take a photo of them when I pull them out for Xmas). Most of those pictured have never been used, though.
ReplyDeleteThe salt cellars are really tiny. Apparently, there are bigger ones, called master salts that sat at the head of the table and were passed around. The closer you sat to the salt, the higher your status was. (Back when salt was scarce.)
