Doctor's Note

Please excuse the Bag Lady from having to type properly for the next few...days....perhaps weeks.

She was doing some construction work and hit her baby finger with a hammer. Hard. Hard enough to explode the tip of her finger... she will probably lose the fingernail, too, as it is all black. The pad of her fingertip is white...wonder if she should go to Emergency.....nah...she'd just have to sit there for hours and hours , and then all they would do would be to bandage it in the same manner that she has already bandaged it. (Well, except theirs would probably look a little neater.)

It hurt so bad that she couldn't even cry. But she's pretty sure her mama never would have expected to hear her well-brought up daughter saying any of those words! In fact, her mama probably never even heard some of those words! (The Bag Lady can be pretty inventive - who knew?)

"Ouch" wasn't even considered. She might cry when the Cowboy comes home, though, 'cause he'll probably want to look at it, and the Bag Lady can't... it hurts to look at it. Seriously, the end of her finger exploded. Actually, it was kinda cool, or at least, it would be if it had happened to someone else. Preferably someone she didn't like much. Like an axe murderer, or child molester....

You know when they ask you at Emergency to rate your pain on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the worst? This was about 99. It's calming down now... probably around 50. It should get down below 10 soon. (Of course, it's only been about 20 minutes since she did it.)

Damn, she was almost done her little project, too.

  1. Ouch! Maybe you should have it looked at? You don't want little bits of bone floating around after all.

  2. Don't think the bone is involved - seems to be mostly the end of the finger. It's lovely shades of purple and black now.... sigh.

  3. When I mashed the end of my little finger off in a door, in addition to the missing quarter inch, I had a tiny spiral fracture. I went around showing my xrays to my friends saying "Look at the itty bitty spiral fracture!" and, being my friends, most of them said "How cute! It's so tiny!"

  4. Oh, crap! I feel your pain, though. I once cut off the end of my right pointer finger with a band saw. We did go to the emergency room, and they put in 2 stitches to hold the tip on. Without numbing it. I coulda done that myself for free!

  6. Oh, Bag Lady, I am hurting after reading your post! Exploding finger, oh my goodness how incredibly painful!
I hope you're feeling a little better now.

    Bad hammer! Bad, bad hammer!

  7. Ooohh ouch ouch ouch. Oooh, poor Bag Lady.
I can sympathize having had a truck door close on my right thumb when I was but a pup.

Now just a minute, if you're hammering then it's the right hand that got it. Right? In which case you hardly use the right baby finger typing so, umm, yer excuse ain't good enough. Git typing now.

Seriously, have it looked at professionally. They may not do anything you haven't already done, but you'll be offered painkillers.

  9. Oh no that sounds HORRIBLE, please tell me you are being looked after! I agree, it's worth getting it looked at purely for sympathy and hard drugs.

  11. Oh no!!!!!

I am such a baby about pain--if it was a 99 I'd be kicking up such a fuss it would be audible for hundreds of miles.

I would have SO gone to the emergency room, if only to have more witnesses and more people to complain to.

Hope it's feeling a bit better and that you have some good drugs on hand.

  12. Oh Bag Lady! I want to cry just from hearing about it. Are you sure no dr?

My Mom ended up on an I.V. and then taking prescription anti-biotics just from a splinter that got infected. I'm thinking maybe better safe than sorry?

    I'm just sayin.

  13. OUCH! It's strange how such a little part of your body can hurt SO MUCH. Haven't ever mushed my finger, but my poor toes have been victims of my clumsiness.
    Hope it's better soon!

  14. Ouch! Hang in there....and keep the peppers coming :)

  15. OH my dear...I hope you feel better soon. You really should have it checked though...sounds awful. And they'd give you painkillers...and make sure it's healing up OK. I'm cringing just thinking abotu it...

My dad always took tools that had hurt him out into the shop and hit *them* with a hammer after...maybe it'd help you feel better?

  16. Thank you all for your sympathy and concern. The Cowboy decided that some anaesthetic was in order, so he got the Bag Lady drunk last night....now she has something else to worry about (oh...my head...!!)

The finger is doing okay - still aching, but not throbbing like it was. (And soon she'll get brave enough to clip off the tiny hunk of meat sticking out of the end of her finger... or not...)

  17. omg you poor thing. I'm in pain just reading about it. You really should get it checked out. {{hugs}} Hope your finger feels better soon.

  18. Thanks, Maggie! It's a long way from my heart (as the saying goes)... and I'm pretty sure there isn't much they could do for it.

  19. oh wow! Exploded!?? That sounds awful! I hope if heals well!

  20. Oh no! Poor Bag Lady:( But your strength with dealing with that kind of pain is pretty awesome:)

  21. Sarah! Good to see you again! Yup, blew a chunk of meat right out the tip...

Sagan - if you could have heard the Bag Lady cussing and screaming, you probably wouldn't have thought she was handling it very well!! :)

  22. Yikes! I hope it heals well and quickly.

  23. df Bag lady,

I can't leave you alone for even one day without you getting into trouble! ;)

Seriously, I am so sorry that you got injured. The Cowboy had a nice solution for the pain.

I hope you are feeling better very soon. You might wnat to hold that arm up, or in a sling for part of the day to remind you to be careful, since ot is on the outside of your hand, I wouldn't wnat you to bang it.

    Hugs. Terrie

  24. Thanks, dfTerrie! I am keeping it wrapped in a big ol'hunk of gauze to give it a little padding.

  25. Um...if something's poking out should you poke it back in or something? *geep*
I'm rusbbish at advice for injuries...if I could figure out how to mail some strawberry "medicine" your way I would...

  26. Geo - it's just a wee tiny piece of flesh poking out - looks like a little scab now. Will probably fall off.
Thanks for the strawbeery offer - that's very sweet of you! (and I wish you could figure out how to send some to me, too, 'cause I'd love to try it!)

  27. Yikes Baggie, that hurt just to read!

I fell once while fishing among some large boulders and tried to brace my fall with my hand. I managed, but split the tip of my thumb in the process. Luckily, it was a very cold November day and my hands were numb.

You have my pity. It'll feel better in a few days though. Hang in there.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Oh, ouch, Frank!
It is feeling a little better today (at least, the part that still has feeling! Part of it is still numb...)
